Job Description

Our client is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to set technical direction across teams and lead the most complex, highest-leverage initiatives on the platform. This is a senior individual-contributor role for an engineer who influences through technical judgement, clear design and strong mentorship rather than direct management. You'll work on hard problems of scale, reliability and data, and you'll help shape the engineering strategy of a growth-stage business.

• Lead architecture and design for reliability, performance and scale across multiple services
• Drive complex, cross-cutting technical initiatives from concept to delivery
• Set and raise engineering standards, patterns and best practices across teams
• Provide deep technical mentorship to senior and mid-level engineers
• Partner with engineering leadership on technical strategy and long-term direction
• Make pragmatic build-vs-buy and trade-off decisions with a strong business lens
• Identify and address systemic risks, bottlenecks and technical debt
• Lead design reviews and help teams make high-quality decisions
• Prototype and de-risk the hardest parts of major new initiatives
• Represent engineering in cross-functional planning with product and data teams

The Successful Applicant

We're looking for a highly experienced engineer who has operated at staff level (or is clearly ready to), with a track record of technical leadership and impact.

• 8+ years of software engineering with deep technical ownership
• Proven track record designing and scaling distributed systems
• Ability to influence and align teams without direct authority
• Strong experience mentoring and levelling up senior engineers
• Excellent judgement on architecture, trade-offs and prioritisation
• Fluency in one or more major backend languages and cloud platforms
• Experience with data-intensive systems is a strong plus
• Outstanding written and verbal communication
